I mean, have you guys even heard of tear gas? It’s apparently all the rage these days, especially among those in positions of power who don’t like it when people speak out against injustice. But let me tell you, this stuff is no joke. I did some research, and here’s what I found out: First of all, what is tear gas? It’s a chemical compound that irritates the eyes, nose, and mouth, causing tears, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Fun, right? And it’s not just one type of gas – there are actually several different compounds that can be used, including CS, CN, and CR. But they all have the same general effects on the body. So, why does tear gas work? Well, when you breathe in the gas, it reacts with the moisture in your eyes, nose, and throat, causing irritation and inflammation. This triggers your body’s natural response to protect itself from harmful substances – tears to wash out the irritants and coughing to expel any particles that may have gotten into your lungs. It’s basically like your body is trying to kick out an unwanted tenant. But wait, there’s more! Tear gas can also cause other symptoms like skin irritation, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. And if you’re exposed to a high enough concentration for a long enough time, it can even be fatal. So that’s cool. Oh, and did you know that tear gas can actually make COVID-19 worse? Yeah, apparently the chemicals in tear gas can damage the respiratory system, making it more vulnerable to infection. So not only do you have to deal with the immediate effects of tear gas, but you also increase your risk of getting sick. Double whammy! Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “But tear gas is used to control riots and maintain order! Surely it must have some benefits, right?” Well, actually, tear gas has been banned for use in warfare by the Chemical Weapons Convention. That’s right, it’s considered too cruel and inhumane to use on enemy soldiers, but apparently it’s just fine to use on civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest. Hmm. As for the claimed benefits of tear gas, they’re pretty dubious. Supporters say that it can disperse crowds and prevent violence, but there’s little evidence to support this. In fact, some studies suggest that tear gas can actually increase aggression and lead to more violence. So, not such a great tool for keeping the peace after all. But don’t worry, there are ways to protect yourself from tear gas if you do happen to encounter it. Some tips include wearing a gas mask (though good luck getting your hands on one of those), covering your nose and mouth with a wet cloth, and washing your clothes and skin thoroughly afterwards to remove any lingering particles. Of course, the best way to avoid tear gas is to not attend protests in the first place, but hey, sometimes you gotta fight for what’s right. So there you have it, folks. Tear gas: not just for war criminals anymore! But seriously, it’s a dangerous and unhealthy tool that should not be used against civilians. Let’s hope that more states follow Massachusetts’ lead in curtailing its use. And if you do find yourself in a situation where tear gas is being deployed, remember to stay calm, protect yourself, and most importantly, keep fighting for justice.
